Azhdahak Mountain – description
Azhdahak (derived from the Persian word “Azhdaha“, which means “dragon”) is an extinct volcano located in the picturesque Geghama Mountain range, reaching an altitude of 3,597 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest and most distinctive peaks in Armenia. In the heart of the volcano’s crater lies a lake formed by meltwater – snow and ice accumulating at the summit, filling the crater during the warmer months of the year. This unique lake adds exceptional charm to Azhdahak and attracts hikers eager to explore the beauty of Armenia’s wild mountain nature. Located just 50 km from Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, Mount Azhdahak offers breathtaking panoramas. From its summit, you can admire not only the highest peak in Armenia, Mount Aragats, but also the symbolic Mount Ararat, which, although located on the Turkish side, remains an essential element of Armenian national identity. The entire landscape around the volcano is rugged and wild, making a trip to Azhdahak a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of Armenian nature. Azhdahak, like the entire Geghama Mountain massif, was uplifted during the Cretaceous period, and its geological structure testifies to numerous volcanic eruptions that occurred thousands of years ago. The last volcanic activity in this area is dated to around 2000 BC. Azhdahak’s cone, with a diameter of about 1,600 meters, is composed of layers of lapilli, ash, sand, cinders, debris, and lava boulders. These formations give the volcano a rugged, almost lunar character, making it unique among Armenian mountains.
Azhdahak – what is the ascent like?
The ascent of Azhdahak is typically part of an expedition that includes climbing other peaks, such as Aragats tour. You can join us to conquer this summit during a trekking adventure among Armenian volcanoes or as part of the more than 2-week expedition “Volcanoes of Armenia and Ararat.” The ascent begins at the base of the volcano, from where we gradually approach the main peak. The entire process – the approach, summit attack, and descent – takes approximately 8-9 hours. During this time, we cover a distance of about 22 km, which also includes trekking to the nearby picturesque Lake Kaput. We usually set up our tents by its shore and spend the night there, recovering our strength for the next challenges. The following day, we head to another peak in the Geghama Mountains, continuing our volcanic adventure. It is worth mentioning that these routes are rarely visited, giving us the opportunity to immerse ourselves in true wilderness and admire landscapes seldom seen by human eyes. Climbing Azhdahak is not only about enjoying breathtaking views but also a unique experience far from tourist trails. We invite active, physically fit individuals who are not afraid of long hikes and are ready for an adventure in the wild nature of Armenia to join this expedition.
