Iztaccíhuatl – mountain description
Iztaccíhuatl (which in the Nahuatl language literally means: Sleeping Woman) is a dormant volcano located in Mexico, attracting both nature lovers and mountain climbing enthusiasts. It rises to an altitude of 5,230 meters above sea level, making it the third highest peak in Mexico. Its topographic prominence is 1,530 meters. While this is not exceptionally high compared to, for example, Mount Damavand in Iran, which has a prominence of 4,667 meters, it is still classified as an ultra-prominent peak. That term is reserved for peaks with a prominence exceeding 1,500 meters. Iztaccíhuatl impresses with its vastness and the picturesque landscapes that surround this majestic mountain. Iztaccíhuatl is a stratovolcano with a complex structure, spreading over an area of 450 km² in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, located northeast of Mexico City. Built mainly from andesitic and dacitic lava, the volcano was formed through numerous volcanic eruptions, which shaped its steep slopes and gave it its distinctive rugged terrain. The higher parts of the mountain feature glaciers and perennial snow, covering significant portions of its peaks and creating a unique alpine landscape in a subtropical country. The last volcanic activity of Iztaccíhuatl occurred during the Pleistocene, although the formation of one of its craters is dated to the Holocene. Since then, the volcano has remained dormant. The area around the mountain is filled with scenic views and diverse wildlife, while the peak itself, with its shape resembling a reclining, snow-white figure of a woman, gives it a unique character that sets it apart from other volcanoes in the region.
Iztaccíhuatl – what does the ascent look like?
Climbing Iztaccíhuatl with the Ararattrek team is usually part of a longer climbing and trekking expedition in Mexico. It lasts about 15–16 days. During the entire adventure, we also ascend the highest peak in Mexico – Pico de Orizaba (5,636 m above sea level) and the Nevado de Toluca volcano (4,680 m above sea level). Additionally, we explore Mexico City and visit many other tourist attractions. The ascent of Iztaccíhuatl is preceded by a bus ride to Nevado de Toluca. This slightly lower volcano gives participants the opportunity for proper, gradual acclimatization. The day before the summit attack, we stay overnight at the Altzomoni refuge at an altitude of 4,000 m above sea level. From there, we climb to another refuge at an altitude of 4,780 m above sea level – Grupo de los Cien – and then return again to 4,000 m above sea level. This way, we complete the acclimatization process, leaving only the final ascent to the Iztaccíhuatl summit. We set off for the summit attack in the early morning. The climb to the summit of the Sleeping Woman takes about 8–10 hours. Once we have taken in the views from the peak (from Iztaccíhuatl, you may be able to see, among other things, the second-highest volcano in Mexico – Popocatépetl), we return to the base camp to continue our trekking and cultural adventure in this extraordinary part of the world.
