Aragats – mountain description

Aragats (which in Armenian means “Ara’s throne” – named after a legendary Armenian king Ara the Handsome) is the highest mountain in Armenia and one of the most distinctive stratovolcanoes in the region. Located north of the Ararat Plain and about 50 km from Yerevan, Aragats offers exceptional views of volcanic landscapes, which stretch along its four peaks surrounding a crater nearly 400 m deep and measuring 1.5 by 2 km. Each of these peaks varies in height – the highest reaches 4090 m above sea level, while the others, with elevations of 4080 m, 3916 m, and 3796 m, form a spectacular ring around the crater. Aragats is a stratovolcano, meaning it is composed of layers of solidified lava and tuffs formed from pyroclastic rocks created during explosive volcanic eruptions. These formations give the summit a unique character: hardened lava flows create incredible formations, while tuff deposits bear witness to the mountain’s turbulent geological history. On the trails leading to the summit, you can often admire diverse volcanic formations that testify to the ancient processes that shaped this part of Armenia. For centuries, Aragats has attracted both researchers and climbers. The first research expeditions took place in the 19th century, when European geologists arrived in Armenia to uncover the secrets of its mountains and volcanic processes. For local residents, Aragats also holds cultural significance as a place full of legends and a symbol of Armenia’s natural grandeur.

Why is it worth going on an expedition to Mount Aragats in Armenia?

A stratovolcano with a unique landscape, featuring four peaks surrounding a crater—that’s Aragats. Armenia welcomes travellers here with its raw nature and history hidden within volcanic formations. Climbing Aragats not only provides exceptional views but also immerses you in the world of wild nature and Armenia’s rich culture. At the summit, you’ll also enjoy a spectacular view of Turkey’s Mount Ararat, called Masis by Armenians—a place of special historical and cultural significance to them. Hiking Aragats’ trails offers the chance to explore less-traveled areas with a unique atmosphere. Why should you visit Aragats?

  1. Diverse routes. Four peaks of varying heights offer trails suited to different skill levels.
  2. Rich volcanic formations. Stunning views of the crater and solidified volcanic rocks are a treat for geology enthusiasts.
  3. Proximity to Yerevan. Climbing Aragats is an opportunity to explore Armenia without the need for long journeys.
  4. Authentic culture. In the surrounding villages, you can experience local traditions, including the production of famous Armenian kilims.
  5. Wild nature. On the lower slopes, you may encounter rare fauna and flora, including wild goats and mouflons.
  6. No tourist crowds. Aragats is a relatively rarely visited peak, allowing for peaceful and authentic mountain experiences.
  7. View of Mount Ararat. From Aragats’ summits, you can admire Ararat, a symbol of Armenian identity.

An expedition to Aragats offers a unique blend of nature, history, and culture, providing an extraordinary experience. It’s a journey that will undoubtedly stay in the memory of every mountain enthusiast.

What is it like to climb Aragats?

Climbing Aragats is usually part of longer expeditions that also include ascents of other Armenian volcanoes: Azhdahak (3,597 m), Nazeli (3,312 m), and Spitakasar (3,555 m). For long-trek lovers and thrill-seekers, we also offer a trip combined with climbing the impressive Turkish five-thousander—Mount Ararat. Located not far from the Armenian border, this combination is entirely possible. The Aragats climb includes reaching two of the mountain’s four peaks: the northern and eastern ones. On the summit day, we are on the move for several hours, covering about 1,000 m of elevation gain—starting at around 3,000 m above sea level and reaching the summit. After that, there’s still the descent 🙂 We reach 3,000 m above sea level by car—saving our energy for the summit attack! First, we conquer the North Summit (4,095 m), and if the whole team still has energy, we head for the next trophy, the East Summit (3,912 m). The entire “Aragats Trekking” operation lasts about 9-12 hours.

When are expeditions to Aragats organized?

The schedule for all trips with Ararattrek is usually planned from January to October. During these months, we organize excursions not only in Armenia but also in Turkey, Iran, and Mexico. We strive to adapt the type of expedition (trekking, climbing, ski touring) to the expected weather conditions for each season. So, when do we climb Aragats? Ascents to this mountain are most often organized from June to September. As mentioned earlier, they are part of longer trekking trips through Armenia and Turkey. However, if you dream of staying on Aragats longer and limiting your expedition solely to this volcano and its surroundings, you can count on us! At Ararattrek, we also organize private group trips, where you can even specify the approximate date that suits you. If you want more information, feel free to contact us! We’re happy to help you plan your dream expedition to Mt. Aragats!

Aragats – how to prepare for the expedition?

The “Aragats Trekking” trip is intended for physically active individuals with good fitness and strong legs, as the demanding route and mountainous terrain pose a real challenge. You need to be prepared for many hours of trekking, which can be exhausting, so good physical shape is essential. The trail passes through diverse terrain, and accommodation is in tents – it is worth preparing for any potential inconveniences associated with this. From experience, we know that these challenges are part of the mountain adventure, which brings immense satisfaction! A key element of preparation is appropriate clothing. Mountain weather can be unpredictable, so layered, breathable clothing that provides warmth and comfort in changing conditions works best. Comfortable trekking shoes are another essential element – long hikes require shoes with good grip and foot support. When climbing the peaks, we travel light, leaving heavier luggage in camps, making it easier to navigate the more challenging sections of the trail. A positive attitude and good humour are also essential on the expedition, helping to cope with the difficulties of the route* and enjoy every moment in the beautiful mountain surroundings of Armenia.
