Damavand – mountain overview
Damavand in Iran is an impressive stratovolcano with a summit that reaches 5610 m above sea level. This remarkable elevation makes it not only the tallest volcano in Asia but also a significant feature on the list of the Volcanic Seven Summits – an alpinist challenge encompassing the highest volcanoes on each continent. The volcanic origin of the mountain gives it a unique character: the slopes are primarily composed of acidic andesite lava, and fumaroles around the summit indicate Damavand’s ongoing volcanic activity. The surroundings of Damavand are equally intriguing. The areas at the volcano’s base are characterized by numerous sulfurous water springs, creating a picturesque yet rugged landscape typical of geologically active regions. The volcano’s last eruption occurred around 5300 BC.
Location and basic parameters of Damavand
Damavand is the highest peak in Iran, towering to an impressive height of 5610 m above sea level. It is a dormant stratovolcano with steep slopes inclined at approximately 30-40°, giving the mountain its characteristic sharp profile. The topographic prominence, or relative height, of Damavand is 4667 m, making it one of the most prominent peaks in the world. This mountain is situated in the Alborz mountain range, only 70 km from Iran’s capital – Tehran. Under favourable weather conditions, Damavand can be seen directly from the city, making it a remarkable attraction for both residents and tourists.
Damavand – pioneering ascent and subsequent conquests
The first recorded ascent of Mount Damavand took place in 905 AD. It was accomplished by Abu Dolaf Kazraji – a traveler and researcher who gained fame for his boldness and exploratory expeditions. Nearly 300 years later, another adventurer, Yaqut Ibn Abdullah al-Hamawi, also attempted to reach the summit but had to turn back just before achieving his goal. For centuries, Damavand was considered an unconquerable mountain. In those times, a peak exceeding 5,000 meters presented an enormous and intimidating challenge for climbers, with the sheer height deterring many adventurers. It was not until the 19th century that interest in Damavand grew among European mountaineers. During that time, several European climbers attempted to reach the summit, but each time they failed to overcome the last few hundred meters. The first European likely to have reached the summit was Theodor Kotschy – an Austrian botanist and traveler – who scaled Damavand’s peak in August 1843, leaving a permanent mark on the history of this majestic volcano’s exploration.
Why should you embark on an expedition to Damavand?
The altitude of 5,610 m above sea level and its volcanic nature make Mount Damavand a particularly challenging climb for mountaineers. An expedition to this majestic summit offers not only extraordinary views but also the opportunity to deeply explore the unique nature and culture of Iran. Damavand is part of the Volcanic Seven Summits, an elite group of the highest volcanoes on each continent, making it a unique climbing destination. The combination of geological and cultural treasures ensures that Damavand offers an experience unlike any other!
Mount Damavand – what does the ascent look like?
The first day of our “Trekking Iran Damavand” expedition is typically dedicated to acclimatization. We drive to the picturesque village of Larijan, located at approximately 2,000 m above sea level. This is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the local hot springs – we recommend this to all participants of Ararattrek expeditions! The next day, we drive up to an altitude of 3,000 m and embark on a 4-6 hour trek. We reach the famous Bargah Sevom shelter (4,200 m above sea level). The day before the summit attempt, we complete an acclimatization hike up to 5,000 m and then return to the shelter. The summit attempt on Damavand begins around 4:00 AM. We climb for approximately 7-10 hours – covering about 1,400 meters. While the ascent is not technically difficult, the sulfur fumes can cause discomfort when breathing. After reaching the summit, we take a short break at the top, enjoying our achievement and taking photos, before descending, which takes around 3-5 hours. This, in essence, is what the “Damavand – Expedition with Ararattrek” entails!

Mountain climbing on Damavand and trekking in Iran – how to prepare for the expedition?
Damavand is not among peaks with a high level of technical difficulty, and the ascent itself does not require specialized equipment such as crampons or ice axes. However, it is important to remember that weather conditions on the slopes can be highly unpredictable, which can pose a significant challenge. Average physical fitness is sufficient, but it is crucial to realistically assess your physical capabilities – trekking on Damavand can take several hours a day, and the summit push itself may take up to several hours. For participants’ convenience, most luggage is transported by horses, allowing for a “light” entry to the camps and conserving energy for the climb. However, it is worth noting some inconveniences: a sulfur cloud hovers over Damavand, and its characteristic smell can be unpleasant, especially for those sensitive to odours. Additionally, due to the peak’s altitude, it’s worth preparing for potential symptoms of altitude sickness, though not everyone experiences them. Climbing Damavand is a challenge accessible even to less experienced climbers, but it requires adequate physical preparation, resilience to changing conditions, and acclimatization. Proper preparation will ensure comfort and safety during this fascinating expedition.
