Nemrut – description of the volcano

Nemrut (named after legendary ruler of Mesopotamia Nemrod) – a dormant volcano located near Lake Van in eastern Turkey, is fascinating due to its geological history and impressive caldera. Various sources report different summit heights, ranging from 2935 to 3050 m above sea level, although it is most commonly accepted that Nemrut reaches a height of 2948 m above sea level. This stratovolcano has a prominence of around 1250 meters, making it a distinct feature in the surrounding landscape. Nemrut is a stratovolcano, meaning it was formed by layers of volcanic material from successive eruptions, including lava, ash, and other pyroclastic rocks. The Nemrut caldera, with impressive dimensions of 8.3 × 7 km, holds within it five lakes, the largest of which, Lake Nemrut, is fed by hot springs, indicating the volcano’s geothermal activity. The eastern part of the caldera is filled with solidified lava flows, a reminder of past eruptions that shaped the landscape of this region. According to some sources, Nemrut is the only volcano in eastern Turkey that has shown activity during the Holocene, the current geological era. The last eruption occurred in 1650, although the major eruptions that shaped Nemrut are dated to the Pleistocene. One of the most powerful eruptions back then influenced the formation of the current landscape and created Turkey’s largest lake, Lake Van.

Nemrut – volcano or mountain?

Before moving on to the details of our incredible expeditions to Nemrut (the volcano), which you can experience with us, let’s address an interesting point. It is worth noting the difference between Mount Nemrut and Nemrut Volcano—though they share the same name, they are completely different locations. The Nemrut Volcano (which we climb) is located 10 km north of the town of Tatvan, on the northwestern shore of Lake Van. It is a stratovolcano with a caldera that harbours picturesque lakes and attests to a history full of volcanic eruptions. It is often confused with Mount Nemrut, which is far to the southeast of Turkey, in Adıyaman Province. Mount Nemrut is best known for its historical statues and massive heads depicting King Antiochus I. It is a place of worship and an impressive relic from Hellenistic times, while Nemrut Volcano is a challenge for trekking enthusiasts and a geological curiosity. Both places attract tourists, but they offer entirely different experiences.
