Nazeli – mountain description
Mount Nazeli in Armenia is part of the Gegham Mountains range, located on the border of the Kotayk and Gegharkunik regions, about 3.5 km southeast of Azhdahak. Nazeli reaches an elevation of 3312 m above sea level, and its summit is dominated by a small crater with erosion grooves formed from volcanic materials such as lava and pyroclastic rocks. The landscape in the area consists mostly of mountain meadows, which in summer transform into beautiful, flowery terrains, attracting many trekking and nature enthusiasts. Geologically, Nazeli is an extinct volcano, meaning that it has shown no signs of activity for hundreds or even thousands of years. Its slopes, although relatively steep, are stable, and the lava formations, lapilli, and pyroclastic rocks testify to past eruptions that shaped the entire area of the Gegham Mountains. From the volcanic cone of Nazeli, with moderate slopes, there are views of the surrounding valleys and lakes, making it an attractive trekking destination. The name “Nazeli” comes from the Armenian word meaning “delicate” or “graceful”, “elegant” which may refer to the gentle meadows and landscapes around it, contrasting with the ruggedness of the volcanic cone.
