Pico de Orizaba – mountain description
Pico de Orizaba, also known as Citlaltépetl – the “Star Mountain”, is a stratovolcano and the highest peak in Mexico, as well as the third highest peak in North America. It reaches an altitude of 5636 m a.s.l. This volcano is also distinguished by its remarkable prominence (minimum relative height difference), amounting to 4922 m, which means that Pico de Orizaba towers impressively over the surrounding terrain. The mountain is located in the picturesque Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, stretching between the Mexican states of Veracruz and Puebla, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes. Pico de Orizaba is considered an active volcano, although its last eruption occurred in 1846. Currently, it shows no signs of activity. It features three characteristic craters and slopes composed of basaltic and andesitic rocks, which are evidence of its volcanic origins. As a stratovolcano built from layers of lava and pyroclastic materials, Orizaba impresses with its steep, irregular slopes that gradually transition into flatter terrains at the mountain’s base. At higher altitudes, glaciers and firn fields can be found, adding to the harshness of the landscape and presenting a challenge for climbers, especially during colder months. The volcano was first ascended in 1848 by American climbers F. Maynard and William F. Raynolds, marking the beginning of its history as a climbing attraction for adventurers from around the globe. The area around the mountain is as interesting and diverse as the peak itself. At the foot of Pico de Orizaba, you can admire rich vegetation, including pine and oak forests. Higher up are grasslands, which give way to the rugged, rocky landscape of the mountain’s upper reaches.

Mount Pico de Orizaba – what does the ascent look like?
The entire “Pico de Orizaba Climbing” adventure is usually part of a longer, over two-week trekking and climbing expedition through Mexican peaks, as well as cities and their surroundings. Naturally, summiting Orizaba, as the highest peak in Mexico, is the highlight of the entire trip! However, before we tackle this peak, we acclimatize by climbing two other volcanoes in the country: Nevado de Toluca (4680 m above sea level) and Iztaccíhuatl (5230 m above sea level). The ascent of Pico de Orizaba begins with a drive in 4×4 vehicles to an altitude of approximately 4240 m above sea level. Here, we find the famous stone shelter Piedra Grande, well-known among mountaineers. We spend the night there while acclimatizing. The next day, we typically climb to an altitude of about 4700 m above sea level before returning to the shelter. On the third day, around 1 a.m., we set off for the summit and begin the ascent of the world-renowned Pico de Orizaba! Climbing to the height of 5636 m above sea level usually takes approximately 9-10 hours. After returning to the shelter, we board the vehicles and continue our trekking and climbing adventure!
Mount Pico de Orizaba – how to prepare for the trip?
The Pico de Orizaba expedition requires good physical fitness and preparation for long days of trekking. Although the peaks are climbed with light equipment, one should expect several hours of summit attempts, so it’s essential to be well-prepared for long mountain hikes. The variable weather and challenging terrain mean that fitness and proper physical preparation are crucial for the comfort and safety of the trip. We take care of logistics, an appropriate schedule, and professional mountain equipment to ensure the smooth progression of each stage of the climb. We also offer participants a seminar on glacier climbing, which is very helpful for ascending Pico de Orizaba. The expedition will undoubtedly be much safer if participants are equipped with the right knowledge. We also provide the support of a licensed Polish-speaking guide, so you can (but don’t have to!) leave your dictionary at home. We especially invite those who already have experience at altitudes above 3500 m above sea level. However, remember that no matter how many hours you’ve spent “with your head in the clouds,” you can still encounter unpleasant surprises like altitude sickness. It’s worth mentally preparing for this possibility. Taking care of your physical health, following a proper diet, and replenishing vitamins and minerals before the trip is undoubtedly a good idea.
