Samsari – mountain description
Samsari is an impressive peak located in southern Georgia, in the Javakheti region, attracting mountain expedition enthusiasts with its unique character and picturesque landscape. It is an extinct stratovolcano with an altitude of 3285 m above sea level, situated in the Samsari Range on the expansive Akhalkalaki Plateau. Samsari’s volcanic past has left visible traces, including a distinctive caldera with an impressive diameter of 3 km, whose floor is covered with rocks and glacial debris. Among this rocky scenery, you can also find small, blue lakes, adding a touch of delicacy and charm to this rugged landscape. Mount Samsari is located about 12 km from Didi Abuli – the highest peak of the Samsari Range – making it an easily accessible destination for those who would like to see two magnificent volcanic peaks of the region on a single expedition. Samsari was formed in the late Quaternary period, giving it particular geological and historical value. The Samsari massif has a distinct, typically volcanic character and is part of what was once the active volcanic region of Javakheti. The rocks forming Samsari are mainly andesites, dacites, and rhyolites, testifying to the mineral richness and diversity of volcanic processes that shaped this mountain over thousands of years. This entire region is a fascinating place for anyone wishing to discover Georgian mountains in their raw, primordial form, making it an excellent goal for both avid climbers and trekking enthusiasts.
Samsari – what is the ascent like?
The ascent of the extinct volcano Samsari is typically one of the stages of a longer expedition with Ararattrek. It is usually part of a trekking journey in the land of hills and volcanoes, the Samsari Range. During such expeditions, we cover about 40 kilometres over several days, enjoying the views and experiencing the unique Georgian culture. The actual ascent of Samsari usually begins with a hike from Lake Tabatskuri, which we reach the day before by 4×4 vehicles. We climb to an altitude of 3285 m above sea level. The trek takes about 6 hours, during which we cover a distance of approximately 11 km. Since the ascent of Samsari is part of a trekking expedition, you should be prepared for daily, long hikes and carrying your own backpack. While no outstanding mountaineering experience is required, good physical fitness will certainly help. During the trek, we usually camp in tents.
